Local Mousehole artist Lizzie Black paints en plein air and impressively captures the character and atmosphere of the village. From the colourful fishing boats to the harbour views out to the Mount, Lizzie's use of light and colour create joyful pieces reminiscent of long summer days spent in Mousehole.
"Painting within the landscape is an utterly absorbing art practice. By working onsite my aim is not to copy, but to find a way of communicating experience. This might be the physical activity of movement, sound, wind or light changes. In some respect I seek to unlearn what I know and describe the subject objectively and without prejudice.
"I am happiest out painting every day, being constantly inspired by the surrounding landscape of Cornwall, and feel privileged to live and work where I am."
Lizzie collects flowers from her garden and from surrounding cliff walks and paths to create compositions at home. With a collection of vintage china and bottles, ‘I enjoy choreographing nostalgic scenes that tell a story and allow the viewer to escape to a colourful world of flowers and edibles drenched in bright sunlight.’
The interplay of light reflecting from a nearby jug or the warmth of a shadow cast by a flower adds depth and intricacy to her work.
Inspired by the impressionist artists such as Vuillard and Sickert Lizzie enjoys painting close family and friends in their domestic settings. She captures the bustling complexity of the interior space aiming to evoke feelings of familiarity, human connection, and comfort.
Lizzie Black is an Associate Memeber of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and has exhibited with them at Mall Galleries in London for the past five years as well as the Royal Society of Marine Artists this year. Recently Lizzie received the Tony Merrick Memorial Prize from the Royal Institute of Oil Painters for her work.

The best way to arrive by car to our home is to drive via Paul Village. Coming down the hill we are the house just after the school gate on the left near the bottom of the hill.
If you have parked in the village, walk up the hill towards Paul Village we are the house on the right hand side before the school playground gates.
The Studio is at the bottom of the garden. There are narrow paths and small steps. Unfortunately we do not allow dogs and furry friends into the garden. There is no parking but there is parking on the hill coming down from Paul Village. There are regular buses very 15 minutes to the village.
