I intend my slab built vessel forms to be enjoyed as 3 -dimensional paintings. The construction of these vessels is informed by a patchwork collage technique that I practice in my sketchbooks. Once constructed, further marks are added using a mixed media approach to ceramic materials. The broad extent of materials I use allows me to create a diverse range of marks, textures and colours, but just as important as the materials used are the varied, diverse and experimental techniques that I use to apply them.
My work is made in response to my understanding of the landscape that I find myself in. Each piece feels like a visual collection of experiences from the landscape that could include memories from walks, glimpses caught when moving through twisting lanes, watching weather changes, feeling the texture of rocks or references to the landscape from the past. I want to avoid making representational images and instead want to evoke a feeling of place through time.
