Nobody, before or since, has ever truly epitomised the true percussive sound of the drummers craft as the legend that was, John Bonham.

This piece is my tribute to the late American abstract expressionist artist, Jackson Pollock. I first encountered Pollock's work at the Hayward Gallery in London's South Bank in the 1980s. Having come from an art education that focused on painting and drawing still life or portraiture, I realised that I simply had no desire to immerse myself in either of these aspects of art as I found them stifling and (although even to this day I appreciate the qualities and beauty of fine art), as an artist, painting in that form of art frankly bored me senseless. I wanted to express myself in my art and so seeing the work of Pollock (and also Picasso) had a very big effect on me.

I was asked some time ago if I would like to paint a tribute to the late musical genius, Prince. This is the second of two paintings I have since created in paying my own respects to the music he gave the world.

'Birth, Love and Death' [Second series]

This is the second in a series of three paintings to reflect and represent the three fundamental themes of Birth, Love and Death. As in the previous series, each painting is a single colour (red, white or black), very deep in texture, and has been painted using only the artist's hands. Only the viewer can decide, dependent on their emotive state, which colour (or colours) signifies each emotion.

I had the idea for this series some time ago, but had put it off until I came up with a way to convey my feelings in the piece. However, the tragedy of this piece is that although I had had a clear idea of how I wanted to mould and shape the paint on each canvas using the primary colour signifiers of white for purity (birth), red for passion (or love), and black for death, the reality became very different. I had wanted the canvasses to be almost identical, to allow the viewer the opportunity to explore which colour represented which stage in existence. Black could be the darkness of unrequited love. Red, the pain of birth, or white, the purity of love, or the 'light' people are believed to have seen during near-death experience. I completed the white painting first, followed by the red. It was just after I started painting the black canvas (the acrylic was very thick on the canvas), I couldn't stop myself from thinking about the loss of my father. I was unable to continue and lifted my hands off the canvas, as I couldn't go on. It was only after I cleaned the black paint from my hands I was able to look at the canvas again and knew that I could never do any more to it than I had done. The piece was finished. Expressionist art often explores the emotions and emotive states of the mind, much like poetry. I once studied writing under the tutelage of playwright, Seamus Finnegan, who told me there are only three subjects: Birth, Love and Death. Dean

Painting is a completely organic thing. Art often dictates where it goes and, as an artist, you can only follow its lead, and let its inspiration come through each time.

Imagine surfing on the north coast of Cornwall in the turquoise and white foaming waters of Watergate Bay on a sunny spring afternoon. Imagine riding down a big rolling wave, its crest behind you. And then you go in, head first. You are caught in the washing machine effect of the breaking rollers as they crash down around and over you. As a novice, you wonder, which way is up? Perhaps this is what it's like when you are surfing with mermaids.

Inspired by walking along Watergate Bay in the evening and thoughts of surfing in darkness with waves cresting and then crashing down upon the midnight Atlantic ocean. I really must learn to surf one day!

This is the first of two paintings I have created in paying my own respects to the late musical genius of the artist, Prince. I was originally asked if I would paint a tribute to Prince in 2019. However, with the events of the following year, the commission disappeared. I decided to continue with a tribute of my own. I hope you see in the painting something of what I saw in my mind when I created this piece. "Moments like this, will be lost in time Like tears, in rain." Blade Runner
