Jana Gilfillan

Ceramics

I work from my garden studio in rural Cornwall, making primarily wheel thrown stoneware pottery.  I make pieces that elevate everyday living from ordinary to celebratory and I particularly love making dishes for sharing food with friends and family.

My colour palette is muted and natural, reflecting the softness of the Cornish countryside. I use St Agnes clay, from 5 miles up the road, and an electric kiln (powered by a renewable energy supplier) to lower my carbon footprint. I mix my own glazes and slips (liquid clay, stained with oxides to provide colour)  which means I can avoid harmful chemicals and be in control of my materials.

I am a member of MAKE Southwes and my work can be found in a small number of shops and galleries primarily in Cornwall and Devon.

Studio information

Turn into Station Road opposite the bakery in Chacewater. The entrance to our property is on the right, immediately after leaving the village and clearly marked 'Gilliflower House and Pottery'. Drive along the gravel track, pass the house and park outside the studio, where there is outside seating available. Alternatively, park in the road and a pleasant stroll down the drive and accross the lawn will bring you to a summerhouse (providing more exhibition space) and my studio. There is plenty of outside seating where you are welcome to sit and enjoy some refreshments.

If you have mobility problems, I would suggest driving all the way up our drive, and parking right outside the studio. There are no steps, but the gravel surface is a little uneven.
