Lucy Joines

Ceramics, painting

My ceramic collection tells a story through clay. The sculptural pieces can make you smile but also remind us of the fragility of our planet and its wildlife.

Many of my sculptures tell the tale of the Hope Boat setting sail with a cargo of animal families hoping to find a sanctuary for them to live, safely away from the ever-increasing pressure on their natural habitats.

My ceramic pieces are hand-sculpted and wheel-thrown using a local stoneware clay found 10 minutes away from my home and studio in Mount Hawke. All colourfully decorated with underglazes and finished with a gold lustre for a touch of magic.

Further information

My journey in ceramics began as a child, inspired by my grandmother’s pottery, and began to develop ideas through clay during my early years in North Devon.

In 1993, I moved to Cornwall to study a BA Hons degree in ceramics at Falmouth and fell in love with Cornwall. I found the art and creative energy so exciting, it was here I met her husband and decided to make a home in Cornwall.

During my studies at Falmouth, I was awarded a The Ferdnand Zweig Scholarship to further my practice in Japan. This experience was life changing in many ways and I learn't many new technical skills and processes in pottery. One of which was learning the traditional throwing method 'off the hump' on the wheel at Joetsu University. The disciplined way of teaching was very effective and inspiring and I went from throwing rice bowls ‘off the hump’ to teapots.

Today my ceramics are inspired by a love of nature and the wild. Much of my childhood was spent freely roaming the land of my family farm in North Devon. The hare is a symbol of this childhood, there were often fleeting glimpses of them in the fields. The book 'The Masquerade' by Kit Williams was also a child hood favorite. With my brother we would try to spy the hare on each page and work out the riddles to find the treasure, which was a golden hare. I like to use gold lustre as a final detail on all of my pieces to further symbolise the magic of childhood.

Alongside my ceramics practice I have enjoyed teaching Art as a Secondary School teacher and I am now a lecturer at Truro College teaching Studio Pottery on Part-time courses.
