Sarah Whittle

Fibre Artist

I'm a fibre artist and hand spinner creating unique artisan handspun yarns and art yarns, hand dyed spinning fibres and woven and knitted textiles. I'm passionate about preserving traditional spinning techniques while infusing my work with a touch of contemporary flair.

I have a background in embroidery and gained a BA (hons) Embroidery degree at Manchester Metropolitan University. I am a published author of 'The Needlecraft Stitch Directory' and my work has been featured in various needlecraft / textile publications.

My current work melds all of the techniques I have learnt over the years to create unique artworks and wearable art inspired by nature and my love of the sea. I love texture and colour and I am inspired by the rugged landscape of West Cornwall.

Some of the techniques I use include, hand spinning, weaving, hand dyeing using natural plant dyes, acid dyes and indigo dyeing, hand embroidery, felt making and knitting.

I sell a range of handspun art yarns, spinning fibres, spinning equipment, woven scarves and artworks under the name Penberth Yarns and these will be availble to purchase during the open studios event. I am also happy to demonstrate hand spinning techniques and you will be able to have a go at weaving or spinning.

Further information

"This fiber is so beautiful I had to take my current project off my wheel just to start spinning this! I've already spun the 1st of 6 rolags up and I'm enchanted. It really reminds me of the waves off of Florida's Gulf coast. That greenish blue with white waves caps and the flash of sun off the sea. Just a gorgeous blend!" Sarah Miller

"Squishy, woolly loveliness, these braids have beautiful depth & tone variations and the colours are nicely saturated. I'm looking forward to felting with these." Ann-Marie
