Granite at Dusk (Land's End series) (I)

One of three works created in response to walks on the granite between Land's End and Porthcurno in late afternoon in winter. Layers of oil paint, mixed with pigments, cold wax and rock powder, with 'sgraffito' techniques to scratch into underlayers, create texture. Time Standing Still
Oil and mixed media on cradled panel 50 cm x 50 cm
This work was inspired by the granite boulders on the wild South West Coastal Path between Land's End and Porthcurno near the small hamlet of Porthgwarra. Perched high above the Atlantic Ocean, the rock is around 270 million years old. In oil, pigments, rock powder and cold wax, with 'sgraffito' scratching to add texture and a sense of age. Framed, white St Ives tray frame, framed size 74 x 74 x 3.5 cm.

This work was created by placing nine small abstract landscapes and seascapes together to make a composite piece of art. It's a peaceful, quiet beach, a mile long, with beautiful views over the Heyl estuary to Gwithian and Godrevy Lighthouse. The backdrop to the beach is cliffs with rocks which are around 350 million years old. In oil, cold wax, pigment and rock powder on wood panel, the work is textured in grey hues with light blue and purple undertones. One of three works made in oil, pigments, cold wax and rock powder on aluminium panels, painted in response to walks around the old mining sites between Cape Cornwall and Pendeen on the West Penwith Coast in Winter 2024. Botallack Mine in particular, with its chimney stacks perched on the cliffs and the ancient arsenic smelter, enables visitors to walk in the footsteps of the mine workers. Now part of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site, in its heydey the mine and its workings extended for half a mile under the sea. 1.5 million tonnes of mining waste were dumped in the sea. Framed, floating in white St Ives tray frame, framed size 60 x 60 x 3.5 cm.
