I make soda-fired porcelain vessels that are thrown on the potter's wheel then carved and shaped when the clay is soft to reflect the fluidity of the material and the physicality of making. The elemental colour and surface texture are created by the fusion of flame and soda in the intense heat of the kiln.
Over the years my work has become simpler and more refined in the belief that stripping away the unecessary can produce work with complexity and depth.

The Doherty Porcelain studio and gallery is located in the 19th Century former Trinity House yard on the quay of Penzance Harbour. It is an iconic building with a unique history overlooking the old clay sheds on the wharfside.
We look forward to welcoming you.
The studio is situated up a brief flight of exterior granite steps that lead to the front door. If you need assistance, please do contact us in advance. We regret that there is no easy access for wheelchair users.
There is limited parking for visitors at Trinity House but there are two car parks within a short walk from the studio.
